This two (2) year scholarship provides an opportunity for an incoming MSW student at WLU to pursue their studies while being a “Good Friend and Neighbour” in an intentional community commonly known as the “Field of Dreams”. WLU is pleased to partner in this scholarship with Elmira Developmental Support Corporation whose objects include creating community through the development of relationships and provision of companionship to people with intellectual disabilities. As part of the scholarship, the successful candidate will live rent free at the “Field of Dreams” in Elmira. The successful candidate will also receive a tuition award of ten thousand dollars ($10,000) each academic year.
The Field of Dreams is an intentional community of four, seven-unit apartment buildings. Five of the apartments in each building provide independent residences for adults with intellectual disabilities. Good neighbours live in the other two apartment units. While all apartments come fully equipped, there are common indoor and outdoor spaces where all tenants gather to share social time with one another.
The role of the Good Neighbour is to provide companionship for the other persons in the building with the intent that these relationships will help to reduce social isolation and at the same time provide a social safety net. All tenants go about their normal daily activities, but also know that they have neighbours with whom they will socialize or check in on when people are at home.
The successful candidate must live in the apartment for the entirety of the scholarship, understanding that there will be allowances for vacation and other time away from the building. Occupancy would commence in August 2022. Consistent public transportation is not available between Elmira and Kitchener-Waterloo.
